Testing and calibration laboratories are essential for industry as they ensure the functionality of electronic products and support type approvals. Audited laboratories offer precise measurement results and comprehensive advice. The Mooser laboratories in Ludwigsburg and Egling have once again demonstrated their competence in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. The German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) confirmed the implementation of numerous standards, including ISO/TS 7637-4 and ISO 10605.

EMC development should start early to avoid later problems. Changes are easier and less expensive in the early stages of development. The laboratories offer comprehensive advice and support in the optimization of components. Components in road traffic require approval from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
Extended scope of accreditation

The renewed inspection and confirmation by DAkkS underlines Jakob Mooser GmbH’s ongoing commitment to compliance with relevant standards. The inclusion of new standards in the accreditation allows the company to have a broader spectrum
to offer testing services and to stay up to date with the latest technical developments.

Audit process

As part of the auditing process, a system audit and a specialist audit took place. These checks served to confirm compliance with DIN EN ISO 17025 and to expand the scope of accreditation accordingly.

Importance of accreditation

Accreditations are particularly important for testing contracts that come from public bodies and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), as they are often a prerequisite for commissioning such services. The accreditation of Jakob Mooser GmbH
confirms their ability to provide high quality services in accordance with recognized standards.

DIN EN ISO 17025: Basis of competence

Accreditation according to the DIN EN ISO 17025 standard is an important part of quality assurance in testing and calibration laboratories. It certifies the existence of a quality management system and the ability to deliver valid test results.

Once again there is good news for Jakob Mooser GmbH in Thanning.

After the German accreditation body (DAkkS) tested Mooser EMC technology again last March and maintained the accreditation, Jakob Mooser GmbH was tested this time. The subject of the audit was the monitoring of accreditation according to DIN EN ISO 17025 with an expansion of the scope of accreditation.

The audit ran over three days with two assessors. On September 20th The system audit was on the test plan on October 25th and 26th. the specialist audit followed. The latter included a very extensive program with a tour of the test sites. The six examined test stations were spontaneously expanded to include three tests for additional standards during the assessment by the assessors.

Big praise to our employees. There were only two non-critical non-conformities during the audit. The colleagues also successfully completed the spontaneous expansion of the scope of the test with a high level of competence and professionalism.

Now that this good news is clear, the new DAkkS accreditation certificate is unfortunately not yet available. We ask for your patience. As soon as we have the certificate, we will make it available for download on our website.

Good to know and important for our customers: Accreditations are a basic requirement for many testing orders, especially from public bodies. Likewise, almost all OEMs require appropriate accreditation for their acceptance measurements.

Accreditation is also very important for us as an EMC laboratory. This allows us to demonstrate the high quality of our services in accordance with internationally recognized standards.

One of the most important standards is DIN EN ISO 17025. It defines the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.

Laboratories accredited according to this standard have their own quality management system and all the requirements to provide valid test results.

DAkkS accreditation is not sufficient for release measurements for American OEMs.

It also requires what is known as recognition. This is regulated in the OEM recognition process. This is a special recognition procedure for EMC laboratories that requires high quality standards for EMC testing on vehicle components and subsystems.

The prerequisite for recognition is proof of the laboratory’s competence based on EN ISO / IEC 17025. Suppliers to the companies are obliged to carry out EMC qualifications for their products in testing laboratories that have accreditation in accordance with the OEM recognition process.

In order to receive recognition, EMC laboratories must submit a facility report. For the OEM Ford, the recognition for the factory standard FMC1278 Rev3 was previously valid. Mooser is one of the few German laboratories to have received this special quality award at the beginning of the recognition process, not only for the FMC1278 revisions, but also for the predecessor standard EMC-CS-2009.

Ford has examined the updated Rev. 4 of the facility report that we have now submitted and has given us renewed recognition. This means we continue to be accredited for approval measurements for all major American OEMs, as we also have recognitions for Fiat Chrysler (FCA), GM, Harley-Davidson and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

Before I set up my own business, I spent twelve years working for an industrial technology company in Munich after graduating in telecommunications engineering. It was there that I learned about the key role that EMC plays in many sectors of industry. For example in defence technology, railway technology, aviation, special vehicles, industrial electronics and industrial plants. During this time, I also gained my first experience in automotive electronics.
Defence technology has been intensively and systematically occupied with the topic of EMC ever since the 1950s. What was particularly valuable for my later career was its systematic approach towards the EMC of the entire system, right down to the requirements for each individual component The first step was to determine the system data, starting by deriving the data from the environment and related to the system with its various areas of application in the air, on the sea and on land. From this, the requirements for each individual component were then derived, depending on the installation location.

From the start of the new millennium, it was already becoming clear that electric mobility was about to take off. I quickly realised that the conventional EMC testing methods were not suitable for high-voltage electric drive systems. So I talked to the German car makers and the major suppliers about the best and most effective way of testing electric powertrains, high-voltage batteries and other high-voltage components. After all, an electric drive system with a power output of 200 kW can’t simply be placed on a standardised measuring bench for testing. It has to be tested in variable load and speed ranges.

After a few months, I had developed a viable concept, and nine months later the first testing chamber for electric drive systems was put into operation in our laboratory in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. At that time, the system had a drive and brake power of 100 kW. The testing chamber was protected under the brand name eCHAMBER® and it set new standards in the market. In the meantime, five eCHAMBER® units are being operated by customers in China and South Korea. EMC specialists in the Far East are also optimizing their systems using technology from Mooser.

We have a large number of employees who have been with us for many years and who appreciate the short decision-making processes and the other advantages of an owner-managed company.
For me, the main areas of focus for the next few years will be the expansion of measuring technology for high-voltage and electric drive systems and testing facilities for fuel cell drive systems. In addition, we will also focus more intensively in the future on testing methods for autonomous driving. driving. I expect to see a need for a lot more coordination with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers on this safety-relevant topic. The testing strategy will probably be expanded in the direction of interconnected and integrated functions. Tests on individual components will no longer be sufficient in many cases. But no matter what the solutions for the future may look like, we will be in an ideal position to provide them, because, in a small, owner-managed company like ours, the decision-making distances are very short. We are also able to decide on major investment in a few months and then to carry out this investment very quickly. This will enable me to hand over both companies to the next generation in an economically strong position in the future.

Not only car drives are electrified. Public buses with electric drives have long been driving through our cities. Manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz Trucks are testing battery-powered trucks in plant-connecting delivery traffic. In Sweden, near Lübeck, near Frankfurt and in the Black Forest, large-scale tests are being carried out with electrically powered trucks, which draw their electrical energy from overhead lines on longer stretches of motorway, similar to trains.

With their higher performance and torque than passenger cars, however, electrified commercial vehicle drives place high demands on electromagnetic compatibility during development. In addition, the larger dimensions of the drive components require new test concepts. The right solution for these challenges comes from Mooser EMC Technik GmbH in Ludwigsburg. They developed the eCHAMBER® for EMC tests on powerful electric motors, transmissions, inverters, clutches, output shafts and axles in commercial vehicles.

The dimensions and performance of the measuring chamber are specially designed for the dimensions of drives in buses and trucks. This means: drive and braking power of several hundred kilowatts, voltages of up to 1000 volts and currents of up to 500 amperes can be displayed without any problems. Successful customer tests on hybrid transmissions with several hundred kilowatts of power and several thousand Newton meters of torque for trucks with a total weight of more than 7.5 tons have confirmed the system concept.

All components of commercial vehicle e-drives could be easily tested for their electromagnetic compatibility. One of Mooser’s specialties is measuring the through-coupling of EMC interference through the drive train – from the electric motor through a mechanical transmission to the axles.

The eCHAMBER® is not only specially designed for commercial vehicle dimensions, but also designed according to the latest technical standards. For example, like all test facilities from Mooser, it meets the requirements of DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. This standard is primarily concerned with the reliability and quality of methods. This ensures that Mooser determines technically competent laboratory results for all measurements relating to the topic of commercial vehicle EMC and thus ensures their international acceptance.

Possible type approvals based on the latest ECE regulation No. 10 Revision 6

In the following, we would like to show you ways in which you can type-approve your products.

1. Original equipment (OEM) products

In principle, there is a type approval obligation at vehicle or component level in accordance with ECE regulation No. 10 Revision 5 or 6. As an essential new part of these guidelines, requirements for the EMC behavior of on-board chargers (OBC) have been created. For conventional 12 V, 24 V and 48 V devices, the basic measurement methods (radiated and conducted interference emission as well as radiated and conducted interference immunity) are still valid.

In the case of non-safety-related products (no function related to immunity), the radiated immunity test may be omitted.
There are a number of additional tests (e.g. surge and burst pulse) for OBCs.

We would be happy to advise you in the area of type approval!

2. Aftermarket products

As an additional regulation for the non-safety-related ESAs (no function related to immunity), which are intended exclusively for the aftermarket, there is the possibility of CE marking (E1 exemption). This requires proof of the tests according to the regulations ECE-R10 Rev. 6 without the test of the radiated interference immunity. This procedure does not require formal type approval.

CE conformity can thus be achieved with the help of the product family standard for electronic devices that are retrofitted in vehicles (DIN EN 50498:2011-04).

Scope of type approvals
E-type approvals are valid in the states that are contracting parties to the UN/ECE Convention and use the regulation in their territory. The contracting parties include the member states of the EU as well as other countries inside and outside of Europe.

The variety of models of electric vehicles is constantly growing, numerous funding opportunities for vehicle purchases and infrastructure measures are promoting electromobility. For vehicle developers, this means that questions about electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) are taking up more and more space in the development process.

Mooser EMC Technik GmbH in Ludwigsburg picked up on this trend early on and is now a recognized service provider for EMC measurements for OEMs such as Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, Jaguar Land Rover and Harley-Davidson and is a preferred supplier to the Bosch Group and is used by Kraftfahrt -Federal Office (KBA) designated as a technical service. A new highlight are four measuring cabins for the EMC analysis of powerful high-voltage electric drives and electrically driven ancillary units. With a drive and braking power of up to 250 kilowatts, voltages of up to 1,000 volts and currents of up to 500 amps, these eCHAMBER® are suitable for EMC tests on powerful electric motors, as well as for inverters, gearboxes, hybrid gearboxes and clutches , output shafts and axles.

Of course, this eCHAMBER® and the other modern test facilities from Mooser are accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. This voluntary standard is primarily about the effective and reliable integration and compliance with the quality management system in the laboratory. In detail, this means the qualification of the devices used and the validation of the methods carried out with regard to their accuracy, robustness and reproducibility. A prerequisite for the professional execution of the tests is the optimal training and high level of competence of the approximately 50 employees at Mooser.

The new version of DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 published in March 2018 shows numerous changes: for example in the structure, the new process orientation, the treatment of opportunities and risks and overall in the much clearer reference to the recently revised quality management standard ISO 9001. Mooser then immediately converted its two laboratories in Ludwigsburg and Egling to the content and requirements of the new standard. A great support in this process was Susanne Kolb and her laboratory consulting company “LaborConsultingGenius GmbH”. Thanks to her extensive experience in laboratory consulting, the processes were converted in accordance with the standard and the subsequent accreditation of the two laboratories according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) was awarded the top mark “zero deviations” in the system and specialist assessment closed. This ensures that Mooser continues to provide technically competent laboratory results for all measurements relating to the topic of EMC and thus ensures their international acceptance. This applies, for example, to battery residual AC voltages, the shielding of materials and components, the determination of interference immunity distances between two EMC-critical electrical components or the analysis of medically relevant magnetic fields.
