Requirements for type approvals
Mooser is authorised to carry out type approvals
Every component in a vehicle that is to be used on public roads must first be approved by the Federal Motor Transport Authority. It therefore has to go through what is known as a type approval process. This process examines whether the component has been developed in an appropriate and technically correct manner and that it complies with applicable laws and regulations.
As a designated technical service, we are allowed to carry out the type approval together with the Federal Motor Transport Authority for electronic and electronic components and systems. Whether you need approval for electric motors, batteries, inverters, antennas, sensors or other components and systems, we have the expertise and the authorisation to test these components in all aspects of electromagnetic compatibility on behalf of the customer and to submit all the relevant documents to the Federal Motor Transport Authority for final approval.
Type approval involves many different kinds of tests
The basic requirements of a type approval test and its contents are set out in Regulation ECE-R10. For example, the components must be tested for any interference emissions in the frequency range from 30 to 1,000 MHz and for their immunity to interference in the range from 20 MHz to 2 GHz, as well as to determine whether they cause significant emissions through wiring in the vehicle. For electric vehicles, this also includes testing the interface between the charger and the stationary power grid.
Designation by the KBA
Our appointment by the KBA entitles us to carry out type tests and type approvals in accordance with the ECE R10 regulation.

Testing facilities make type approvals easier
If you commission us to carry out a type approval for your components, you will benefit from our extensive measuring and testing infrastructure at our two locations in Ludwigsburg and Thanning. We test your components in exactly the same measuring chambers that we also use to carry out tests on interference emissions, immunity to interference, shielding effectiveness and other EMC aspects during the development process. That’s why you can rely on our well-known test expertise and receive precise results and statements – guaranteed! What is more, our measuring chambers – for example our groundbreaking eCHAMBER® – are so efficient and so versatile that we are able to carry out all the necessary type testing with just a few different tests in a few chambers. The shorter set-up times involved will save you time and therefore money.
since
Type approval is more than simply measuring
Our appointment as a technical service by the Federal Motor Transport Authority first of all gives you the guarantee that we carry out the EMC tests and all of the necessary administrative work for type approval thoroughly and properly. But our range of services includes much more than that.
- Even from our very first contact, we check whether your company meets the administrative requirements for applying for type approval.
- We work together with you in ensuring that only optimally prepared and production-ready components are allowed to go through the process of type approval. DELETE – This minimizes the risk of the type approval failing.
- We prepare the EMC tests relevant to your component together with you and then carry out the measurements on your behalf.
- As soon as you as the customer have provided the necessary technical documents (such as circuit diagrams, design drawings, parts lists), we create the description sheet from them. At the same time, we prepare the test report from the results of the EMC measurements.
- • As soon as all the relevant documents have been optimised together with you, we submit them to the Federal Motor Transport Authority for approval.
Mooser will accompany your component throughout its entire life cycle
Type approval is by no means a one-off process before the start of series production. Any subsequent optimisation or modification to a component must be reported to the Federal Motor Transport Authority. We will take responsibility for this and sort out every detail for you:
- First let us know how you intend to optimise or modify the component.
- We will then check whether the planned changes have any relevance for EMC, for example, and will discuss what testing is required.
- We will then take responsibility for carrying out the tests.
- At the same time, we will complete the component documentation by adding the design optimisations and the measurement results.
- Finally, we will submit the updated documents to the Federal Motor Transport Authority on your behalf.
Soft skills and a broad portfolio create added value
In all aspects of type approvals, you can benefit from our extensive experience gained from decades of cooperation with the Federal Motor Transport Authority and more than 200 successfully completed approval processes. We know exactly what the requirements of the Federal Motor Transport Authority are and we are also well aware of the demands and wishes of our customers. This ensures that the type approval process runs smoothly at all times.
The added value for you is our extensive testing landscape, which enables us to measure all electric and electronic components – including complete electric drive systems and complex high-voltage batteries. This is something that only very few providers of EMC type approvals can do.
Our “one-stop shop” strategy is rounded off by our personal support concept. We will assign one of our employees to act as a fixed contact partner with responsibility for your project. Their expert knowledge and personal experience will ensure that even the most demanding type approval for your component will run smoothly – right through to its successful completion.
Frequently asked Questions
Type approval is the process required for the technical testing and approval of a vehicle component or a complete vehicle. Type approval is the process required for the technical testing and approval of a vehicle component or a complete vehicle. No component or vehicle is allowed to be used on a public road if it does not have type approval. In the approval process, the relevant technical requirements must be met, as defined in the ECE regulations..
The Directive for the type approval of vehicle components and complete vehicles is divided into around 160 individual ECE Regulations. For aspects of electromagnetic compatibility, Regulation ECE-R10 defines the precise requirements and testing scenarios.
As a rule, type approval for vehicle components and vehicles is granted by a statutory approval authority. In Germany, this is the Federal Motor Transport Authority. The approval authority can also be chosen from other EU member states. Mooser works exclusively with the Federal Motor Transport Authority.
The technical service performs the tests, prepares the final report and carries out the technical evaluation of the results. The technical documents may only be submitted to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (approval authority) by a technical service. The type approval (type-approval certificate) is issued by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (approval authority).
Mooser was designated as a technical service for electromagnetic compatibility by the Federal Motor Transport Authority in 2001 and is therefore authorised to carry out type-approval tests on behalf of the state (approval authority).
Mooser is a globally recognised testing and inspection laboratory for all aspects of electromagnetic compatibility in motor vehicles, rail vehicles, aviation and military technology. In addition to this, we have also been carrying out type approvals for the EMC of vehicle components for many years. This combination guarantees our customers a high level of technical expertise and a smooth implementation of the project flow with few interfaces.
Basically, yes. However, any modification to a component in its subsequent life cycle requires a supplementary test in which the EMC properties, which may have changed due to the modification, have to be tested again
